The neem tree, also called the miracle tree, has been known for its amazing health benefits. Especially for promoting a healthy scalp and strong hair growth.

And one of the best ways to use neem for your hair is to make it into an oil.

So in this article, I will be guiding you through the correct DIY methods on how to make neem oil at home for your hair.

DIY Methods on How to Prepare Neem Oil For Hair at Home

There are two different methods you can use to make neem oil for your hair at home.

  1. HOT-PRESS METHOD – This method is the fastest method, since it takes less than 30 minutes to prepare but requires some amount of tools.
  2. COLD-PRESS METHOD – Requires no tools however it will take longer to prepare (5-7days)

Both of these methods will give you the same results.

How to Make Neem Oil Using the Hot Press Method

Items Needed:

  • Freshly picked neem leaf or you can use neem powder if available
  • Any Type of Carrier Oil such as coconut oil, or rosemary oil or any other preferred hair oil)
  • Castor oil
  • Containers that can be used for either double boiling or microwaving
  • Airtight container which are clean and dry
  • Sieve

The ratio of the mixture should be: 2 parts Carrier oil to 1 part Neem flakes to 1 part Castor oil.

Procedure:

  1. Gently rinse and pluck neem leaves from the stem.
  2. Add to grinder or a blender to make it into a powder/flaky like form.
  3. Pour adequate amount of carrier oil such as coconut oil (or any preferred hair oil) to the neem flakes
  4. Microwave the mixture for 15-20 minutes OR you can Double Boil the mixture for about 20 minutes.
  5. Constantly check and stir your mixture (and look for a green-colored-like change). Stirring allows the diffusion of nutrients from neem leaves, which will combine with the oil.
  6. While boiling add the castor oil to the mixture.
  7. After boiling and leaving for cooling, we use a sieve to strain the finished product, into the dry clean container for storage.

Double Boiling is where the oil is heated to a certain temperature without applying direct heat. It is a gentle and slower method of boiling. Double Boiling prevents the damaging of essential properties of the oil. You can click here to learn more.

How to Make Neem Oil Using the Cold Press Method

Items Needed:

  • Freshly picked neem leaves or you can use neem powder
  • Any Type of Carrier Oil (such as coconut oil, rosemary oil or any other type of hair oil)
  • Castor oil
  • Airtight container
  • Sieve

The ratio of the mixture should be: 2 parts Carrier oil to 1 part Neem flakes to 1 part Castor oil.

  1. Gently rinse and pluck leaves from the stem
  2. Add to grinder or blender to make it into a powder/flaky like form
  3. Pour adequate amount of carrier oil such as coconut or rosemary oil (or any preferred hair oil) to the neem flakes
  4. After which add the Castor oil to the mixture.
  5. Mix well and let it sit for 5-7 days. This act allows the diffusion of nutrients from neem leaves, which will combine with oil.
  6. Use sieve to strain mixture into a dry clean container for storage.

NOTE:- It is recommended to apply oil to hair 1-3 times weekly for better results (depending on hair’s health). Results may differ due to hair type, diet, products, and day to day activities (conducive to hair growth)

How to Properly Store Neem Oil For Hair

This all depends on how long you would like to store your neem oil.

  • 1 – 2 months – it could be stored at normal room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
  • 3 – 4 months – if stored properly in a cool dark place away from sunlight and moisture. Do not store above 46°C (110°F) and below 5°C (41 °F).

When subjected to repeated freezing and thawing Neem Oil will lose its effectiveness.
